Stablecoins, a type of cryptocurrency, are pegged to a stable asset like the U.S. dollar and thus rarely fluctuate in value. Many of the dozens of stablecoins in circulation today are pegged to the dollar or another government-issued fiat currency like the euro or yen. One of the biggest “black swan” risks to the cryptocurrency market, with over $100 billion in circulation, more crypto traded against them than any other fiat currency, and a market cap that has increased by more than a factor of five over the course of the past year.
